END OF WATCH. With profound sadness, the Austin Firefighters Association joins our Austin Fire Department family in mourning the loss of retired Arson K-9 Smokey, who passed away on June 16, 2026, at the age of 14.
For years, Smokey served the citizens of Austin with unmatched dedication, helping investigators uncover critical evidence and assisting in some of the most challenging fire investigations across our city. After graduating from training at Lackland Air Force Base, the Belgian Malinois became an invaluable member of the Austin Fire Department, spending eight years working side-by-side with his handler, retired Battalion Chief Randy Elmore.
While many knew Smokey for his remarkable abilities and professionalism on scene, those closest to him knew him as much more—a loyal partner, trusted teammate, and beloved member of the fire service family. His work helped bring answers to victims, accountability to those responsible, and support to countless investigations throughout his career.
Even after retirement, Smokey remained a cherished part of the Austin Fire Department community. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the cases he helped solve, and the firefighters who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
We extend our deepest condolences to Randy Elmore, Firefighter Janelle Elmore, Jaxon Elmore, and Miles Elmore as they mourn the loss of a faithful companion and family member.
Today, we honor a true public servant whose impact reached far beyond the fireground.
