Wallace was found standing alone in the middle of a St. Louis street just hours into the New Year — covered in blood and fighting for his life.
When police officers arrived, they knew something was terribly wrong. The brave gray-and-white pit bull had been shot multiple times. They rushed him straight to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, where vets confirmed the devastating truth.
Despite everything he had endured, Wallace was still standing when help came. Under anesthesia, the team discovered a small miracle: none of the bullets had shattered his bones. Hope was alive.
Just 48 hours later, Wallace underwent surgery to remove the bullets and a damaged tooth. Through the pain and fear, his gentle, loving spirit never faded.
One shelter team member, Julia, stayed right by his side as he woke up — making sure he didn’t open his eyes alone. “We got you, strong boy,” they told him.
As he began to heal, Wallace got a much-needed bath to wash away the blood and pain. But the most touching moment came four days later when the two officers who saved him — Officers Ottengheime and Stevens — returned for a visit.
Wallace recognized them instantly.
He showered them with pure love — covering both heroes in what Stray Rescue called “about 1 million grateful kisses,” wagging his tail nonstop.
Less than 10 days after his nightmare began, a loving couple was already ready to adopt him. They’ve been visiting regularly while he continues to heal at the shelter.
