It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we share the passing of a true hero. On June 17, K9 Cyrus, a dedicated 7-year-old Belgian Malinois with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Utah, peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge following a sudden and severe medical emergency.

The emergency began early in the morning on June 14, at the very end of his shift. Recognizing that Cyrus had suddenly fallen ill, his team rushed him to a local emergency veterinary clinic. Due to the critical nature of his condition, he was quickly flown to the Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center to receive advanced, specialized treatment.
For three long days, veterinary specialists fought tirelessly to save him. Through it all, Cyrus showed the same fighting spirit he was known for on the streets. Tragically, despite receiving the highest level of intensive care, the time came for this brave protector to rest. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by the absolute love of his handler and family, who stayed right by his side until the very end.
Cyrus joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2020 and quickly proved to be a powerhouse for justice. He wasn’t just a local asset; he was cross-designated with Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team. Over his distinguished career, Cyrus stood as a shield for his community, answering the call in more than 360 patrol and narcotics deployments. His fearless dedication led directly to 322 arrests and the removal of over 2,000 pounds of dangerous, illegal narcotics from our streets.
Beyond his legendary statistics, Cyrus was beloved by his fellow deputies for his vibrant, energetic personality and an unmatched work ethic that inspired everyone around him.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has extended its deepest condolences to Cyrus’s handler, his family, and the entire law enforcement K9 community, while expressing immense gratitude to the public for the overwhelming outpour of support during this devastating time.
Thank you, K9 Cyrus, for your fierce protection, your absolute loyalty, and the ultimate sacrifice of your strength and energy to keep us safe. Your watch is ended, friend. Rest easy.
